A Little Spring Green on the Lower Madison Yesterday??? 18 January 2010, 12:14 pm
Three weeks or so ago temperatures in the neighborhood were fighting like hell to break the zero mark.
Yesterday afternoon on the lower Madison (Blacks Ford to Greycliff) we saw a fair number of fisher-folk and temps in the 50 degree range (53 to be exact).
There were fewer fish and a few more mistakes with rod [...]...

Interesting Curveball from Fish Can’t Read…… 15 January 2010, 1:29 pm
Fish Can’t Read’s e-magazine has been sold – it’s official today.
From their blog today…..
Life has a funny way of throwing a surprise or two into the mix when we’d least expect it.
Sometimes those surprises take the form of sobering challenges that tax our resources to the max.
Sometimes those surprises take the form of something unexplainably [...]...

Thinking Snow and Itchin’ to Get Out…. 5 January 2010, 12:24 pm
The first week of January almost inevitably finds lots of fly fisher folk itchy to get out and stretch after the holiday season.
This year in particular finds me among that cadre – the past six weeks or so (since Thanksgiving) have been the busiest in memory and it’s been damned cold around the neighborhood.
The penetrating [...]...

Ho Ho Ho! 24 December 2009, 10:40 am
Merry Christmas to all from the frozen north.
It’s a chilly -4 this Christmas Eve morning in Bozeman. Thanks to yesterday’s 4 or 5 inches of new snow it looks as if the neighborhood has been scrubbed clean and whitewashed for the holiday.
Thanks to all who have emailed, called, etc. to make sure we’re still alive [...]...

Friday Feast 18 December 2009: Santa’s Favorite Tamales 18 December 2009, 11:46 am
Santa called yesterday.
He was checking to make sure that we were making our traditional Christmas Eve tamales this year. He’s enjoyed the several we’ve left out for him over the past few years, though he likes the traditional recipe better than the ‘fusion’ tamales that’ve been popping up here and there.
Sounds like Santa is planning [...]...

The iPad and Disconnecting from Technology 1 February 2010, 8:48 am
This week, Apple introduced the iPad, a new tablet computer. The Wall Street Journal said: “Last time there was this much excitement about a tablet, it had some commandments written on it.” The iPad looks like an iPod on steroids, with a large screen about the size of a piece of paper.
With an iPad, you will be able to do email, watch movies, surf the web, listen to music, look at pictures and read books. And I want one. In fact, every time a new piece of amazing technology is released...

The Dubai Tower and What We Build In Life 21 January 2010, 10:40 am
On January 4th, the Burj Dubai, arabic for the Tower of Dubai, was officially opened as the tallest building in the world. The Burj Dubai is 2717 feet tall, 160 stories. It is roughly as tall as the two World Trade Center towers placed one on top of the other. It is a beautiful building, designed by an architect from Chicago.
The Burj Dubai was built at the height of the global real-estate boom. It cost 1.5 billion dollars to build and due to the real estate crash, it is currently mostly empty...

Spiritual Fly Casting and Wading 21 January 2010, 10:40 am
Casting a fly rod and wading through a cold-water stream can be spiritual experiences. It is an art form to cast a fly correctly. Using an eight to nine foot rod, a fluorescent line and clear leader and tippet, the fly fisher casts the fly out on to the stream. One can learn the basics of casting in a few minutes, but it takes practice to drift a fly correctly and to lure a trout to the surface.
I was first inspired to take up fly fishing after seeing the beautiful casting in the film “...

Keeping a Trout for Dinner? 21 January 2010, 10:40 am
I have not taken a trout home for dinner in a few years. Out of the few dozen rainbow, brown and brook trout that I brought to the net, each fish was released back to the stream and swam back into the depths. I practice catch and release fishing for the health of the streams, knowing that if we were all to keep every fish caught, the rivers would soon be empty.
The simplest reason why I release the fish that I catch is that I do not enjoy killing a fish. Rainbow and brown trout are beauti...

No Family is Perfect 15 December 2009, 9:18 am
During this time of year, we wish to be near our families and share the warmth of holidays with them. We may also have mixed emotions and can encounter difficulties in being with our loved ones. No family is perfect, and often we deal with family issues during this holiday season. In Hebrew we call family mishpecha, or in Yiddish, mishpocha. Judaism offers a number of helpful ideas for dealing with mishpecha during the holidays. Judaism teaches us that no family structure is perfect. We te...

An Extinct Trout Stream 8 December 2009, 10:43 am
With Fall upon us, my fishing season is nearing its end as the temperature continues to drop. On a recent fishing trip in October, I felt the chill of the water on my hands and the brisk air in my lungs. I was reminded of a much earlier fly fishing outing I took in late March. It was the first nice sunny day of the impending Spring. I was desperate to be out on the water after not having touched my fly rod in months.
I traveled to a local stream where I had success in the past. It is a...

The Story of Hanukkah 7 December 2009, 8:28 am
The Jewish holiday of Hanukkah begins this year on Friday, December 11th and continues for eight days. The word Hanukkah means dedication, and the holiday celebrates the rededication of the ancient Temple in Jerusalem. Around 200 BCE (before the common era), Jews were living as an autonomous people in Israel under Greek rule. Twenty-five years later, Antiochus Epiphanes looted the Temple in Jerusalem and massacred Jews. He ordered a statue of Zeus erected in the Temple and sacrificed pig...

Is Thanksgiving a Jewish Holiday? 23 November 2009, 5:12 pm
One day in late November a few years ago I ran into a congregant in the hallway of my Temple. She wished me a Happy Thanksgiving. Then she said: “Oh wait a minute. I didn’t mean to offend you. Do you celebrate Thanksgiving?” I said: “Of course! Jews celebrate Thanksgiving.” She laughed, a little embarrassed, and then I wished her a Happy Thanksgiving too. Picture: A stream near our house in the fallThere are many ritual, historical and theological connections between Judaism an...

The Film 2012 and The End of The World 16 November 2009, 11:15 am
This past weekend a new movie came out, 2012, in which human civilization will comes to an end on December 21st, the winter solstice, in the year 2012. The film is based on an interpretation of the ancient Mayan Long Calendar. The Mayan civilization, an advanced culture in what is now Mexico, was the only group in the Americas to develop writing before the arrival of Columbus. The Mayan Long Calendar is divided into cycles of about 400 years. We are currently in cycle number 13, whi...

The Diva of Din and Self-Awareness 2 November 2009, 12:56 pm
Florence Foster Jenkins was an operatic singer who performed in New York City for decades, singing her last show at Carnegie Hall in 1944. Mrs. Jenkins portrayed herself as a legitimate opera singer yet she had little sense of pitch and could not sustain a note. People came to her concerts not to appreciate her music, but to laugh at her. They called her “The Diva of Din.” What struck me about Mrs. Jenkins was her seeming complete lack of shame and embarrassment even when people laugh...
