How To Turn Hackle And Dubbing Into Happiness… 1 February 2012, 7:12 pm
At the end of fly fishing trip, this is a good thing to see: In one sense, successful fly fishing is about turning hackle and dubbing into tiny little pieces of garbage, and while the numbers are hardly astonishing, Chris Raine and I did turn formerly useful #20 flies into what I’d suggest were a [...]...

The Underground’s “2011 Fly Fishing Year In Pictures” Post 31 January 2012, 6:26 am
Somewhere around the middle of December I lost steam on a “2011: The Year In Pictures” post, the problems being I didn’t have any time, and once I did, I realized I had damn few good pictures from 2011 (in the image department, it was nowhere near as good as 2009). Still, perspective adds a [...]...

What Russell Chatham’s “The Angler’s Coast” Really Teaches Us 30 January 2012, 2:53 pm
An Undergrounder sent me an old hardback copy of Russell Chatham’s The Angler’s Coast, and while the writing is evocative and the stories interesting, the most intriguing aspect of the book was its look at fisheries that — in many cases — no longer exist. Chatham was something of a fly fishing bum and the [...]...

The Fly Rod Edition: Chasing The Upper Sacramento BWO Hatch 30 January 2012, 12:18 am

Wherein we recant the “you can’t have none” taunt, and admit to most of the obvious shortcomings 26 January 2012, 9:06 pm
One of the horrors of being thoroughly enamored of a hobby is the fits of giddy that result when something attempted actually lives up to the original idea, versus flaming out midway through the development process. John Merwin's blog post the other day referenced a book by Pat Dorsey (Tying and Fishing Tailwater Flies). So I thought I'd follow up with an "On The Spot" interview I did with Pat at the recent International Sportsmen's Expo in Denver.

The "Rudest" Trout Rivers in America 30 January 2012, 10:33 am

The other day I watched a television news report on "rudest cities" in America. According to Travel + Leisure, New York City supplanted Los Angeles for the top spot on the list. Miami was second. For the record, I love New York, and not just because my bosses work there. I'm energized when I visit New York. I even respect the Yankees. Granted, I live where I do (Pine, Colorado) for a reason, but the Big Apple has always been a great place to visit.
I find it hard to set a "ru...

Is Tenkara Fly Fishing a Fad? 25 January 2012, 12:25 pm

Lefty Kreh, who may just be the most recognized authority on fly fishing ever, told Tenkara USA founder Daniel Galhardo that, “Tenkara is a fad and it won’t last long." Talk about candor. What's more interesting is that Daniel posted a recap of the conversation on his blog.
Another twist to all of this is that there have been rumors and rumblings for some time that Temple Fork Outfitters (and Lefty is the leading spokesperson for TFO) has been planning to manufactu...

How the puffer fish gets you high, zombifies you, and kills you 4 February 2012, 3:00 am
And make no mistake, people do die from fugu poisoning. About five people a year make puffer fish their last meal, and many more get violently sick from it.
It's not a pleasant way to go.

Proposed California Striped Bass Regs Shot Down 3 February 2012, 3:00 am
Striper Rise art by Mike Savlen
Remember those shitty new striped bass regulations California Fish and Game was proposing?
In a unanimous decision, Commissioners voted not to pursue a proposal that would have changed sport fishing regulations related to anadromous striped bass, including increasing bag limits and decreasing size limits.

Fly Fishing and Conservation 12 December 2011, 6:52 am
When first learning to fly fish, all of our energies are consumed in mastering the basics; getting the right gear, learning to cast, becoming comfortable wading through the stream. Then we hook our first trout. When the line goes taut, our adrenaline spikes. We somehow manage to get the fish to the net and break out in a wide smile, whether the fish is a eight inch brown or an eighteen inch rainbow.
We begin to become comfortable in our own skin as anglers and we have held a good number...

Fly Fishing and Compassion 29 August 2011, 10:15 pm
Compassion is a core value in many religious traditions. Judaism teaches that everyone, no matter how poor, must give tzedakah, charity, to remember that there is always someone out there in a more difficult situation. Jews must also visit the sick, feed the hungry and perform gemilut hasadim, acts of loving kindness.
A day of fly fishing in Argentina this spring reminded me that compassion can occur on a stream as well. Although not in the famous fly fishing region of Patagonia, my guide Lucas...

Fly Fishing & Frustration 17 January 2011, 3:00 am
Fly fishing is filled with times of frustration: getting rained out on the stream, losing a fly in a low hanging branch, being unable to thread your thin tippet line through the hole of a tiny little hook because your hands are too cold. One time I drove an hour from home to fish a new river. When I opened the trunk to put on my gear, I discovered that I had my vest and net, but had left my fly fishing rod at home.
Perhaps the ultimate frustration in fly fishing is not catching any fish. Somet...

The Fly Fishing Reverend 15 January 2011, 9:12 am
This article on The Fly Fishing Rabbi is by Dr. Michael Attas, a practicing cardiologist, professor and an ordained Episcopal priest. He has avidly pursued fish with the magic of flies all over the world for 40 years. Dr. Attas also writes a column for the Waco Texas Tribune on health, ethics and religion.
Several years ago I was sitting in the Houston Intercontinental Airport when my cell phone rang. It was the wife of Will Spong, who was perhaps my closest mentor in my dual life as a physici...

Fly Fishing for Tarpon, Permit and Bonefish 15 January 2011, 9:03 am
I am very pleased to be able to share this article by my friend Dr. Michael Attas, a practicing cardiologist, ordained Episcopal priest and avid fly fisher:
While I cherish my time on my home waters of the Rockies, I also long for the chance to explore new places with my fly rod and to move into new territories-both physically and spiritually. On a trip to Belize, we searched for the big three for salt water fly fishermen—tarpon, permit and bonefish. Each requires a certain type of equipm...

Is Thanksgiving a Jewish Holiday? 19 November 2010, 3:40 pm
One day in late November a few years ago I ran into a congregant in the hallway of my Temple. She wished me a Happy Thanksgiving. Then she said: “Oh wait a minute. I didn’t mean to offend you. Do you celebrate Thanksgiving?” I said: “Of course! Jews celebrate Thanksgiving.” She laughed, a little embarrassed, and then I wished her a Happy Thanksgiving too.

Roscoe is the center of fly fishing in the Catskills. For over 100 years, the Beaverkill, Willowemec, Delaware and other streams have attracted the preeminent fly fishers in America including Theodore Gordon, Art Flick and Joan and Lee Wulff. The Drive to The Trout Stream 8 November 2010, 10:29 am
There is something special about the drive to the river. It is a time of transition, as we leave behind our everyday lives and focus only on the stream, the fly rod and the trout. Whether a two hour drive to a local stream our a two day trek to famous rivers in far off countries, the journey to the water can be an opportunity to separate from the world of work and obligation and to enter a quiet, beautiful and natural place.
One August morning a few years ago, I arose well before dawn and pa...
